Hurricane Milton is rapidly approaching Florida, having strengthened into a potentially catastrophic storm. Currently classified as a Category 5 hurricane, Milton is expected to cause severe damage across Florida’s Gulf Coast and beyond. Meteorologists are calling this storm “unsurvivable” due to the magnitude of its winds, flooding, and storm surge. Experts are warning of devastating impacts, including structural collapses, particularly to mobile homes, and widespread flooding in low-lying areas.
The storm has prompted extensive evacuations, with local and federal authorities urging residents in affected areas to leave immediately. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency, covering more than 50 counties, and President Joe Biden has approved emergency declarations, allowing FEMA to coordinate relief efforts. Despite these precautions, many areas remain vulnerable, particularly around Tampa Bay, where storm surges of up to 28 feet are predicted, combined with rainfall that could exceed 18 inches.
